🚶 Garden 2 · Movement
🌲 Trail and river path. Movement can support strength, mobility, mood, function, and connection. Walking, rolling, stretching, gardening, strength training, and play all count. A ten-minute walk after a meal is a wonderful start.
👀 Notice: what kind of movement feels realistic, enjoyable, or meaningful to you?
🌱 Next small step: choose five minutes of movement that fits your body today.
🩺 Support: a physical therapist or your clinician can help if you have pain, injury, or a health condition.
📚 What the evidence says
- 🟢 Short walks lower blood sugar. In a review of randomized trials, light walking breaks of usually 2–5 minutes lowered after-meal blood sugar and insulin compared with uninterrupted sitting, and did better than standing breaks. (Buffey and colleagues, Sports Medicine, 2022)
- 🟡 More daily steps, longer life. In 15 studies of 47,471 adults, people taking the most steps had about half the risk of death of those taking the fewest. Benefit leveled off near 6,000–8,000 steps a day for adults 60 and older and 8,000–10,000 for younger adults. (Paluch and colleagues, The Lancet Public Health, 2022)
