Practical help to eat well and flourish.

🌍 Garden 8 · Global Impact

🌊 River flowing to the ocean. Our choices, professions, communities, and systems can influence well-being beyond ourselves, through food systems, prevention, public health, health equity, and caring for others near and far.

👀 Notice: how might your actions contribute to a healthier community or world?
🌱 Next small step: choose one small action that supports something larger than yourself.
🩺 Support: local volunteer centers and community health organizations can help you find a place to start.

📚 What the evidence says

  • 🟡 Nurse staffing saves lives. In 168 Pennsylvania hospitals with about 230,000 surgical patients, each additional patient per nurse was linked to 7% higher odds of death within 30 days and 23% higher odds of nurse burnout. (Aiken and colleagues, JAMA, 2002)
  • 📊 A global workforce, unevenly shared. The World Health Organization counted 29.8 million nurses in 2023 and a shortage of 5.8 million; 78% of the world’s nurses work in countries home to 49% of the world’s people. (World Health Organization, State of the World’s Nursing, 2025)

🟢 Strongest: randomized trials, reviews of trials or clinical guidelines · 🟡 Observational studies: they show a link, not proof of cause · 📊 Official workforce data. Sources checked October 29, 2026.
