📚 What the evidence says
- 🟡 Fiber protects. In a review of 185 long-term studies and 58 clinical trials, people who ate the most fiber had 15–31% lower risk of early death, heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes and colorectal cancer than people who ate the least. Benefits were greatest at 25–29 grams a day or more. Celebrate the fiber! 🎉 (Reynolds and colleagues, The Lancet, 2019)
- 🟡 Whole plant foods, not just “plant-based.” Among 209,289 nurses and other United States health professionals followed for more than 20 years, the healthiest whole-plant-food pattern was linked to 25% lower coronary heart disease risk, while plant diets built on refined grains, sweets and sugary drinks were linked to 32% higher risk. (Satija and colleagues, Journal of the American College of Cardiology, 2017)
