🕊️ Garden 9 · Faith & Compassion
☀️ Sunlight through evergreens. Faith, compassion, spiritual meaning, and care for others can be important sources of strength, connection, and hope. This Garden welcomes everyone: people of any faith, the spiritually curious, and people who don’t identify with a religion.
👀 Notice: what helps you reconnect with compassion, meaning, faith, or something larger than yourself?
🌱 Next small step: offer one act of compassion, toward yourself or someone else.
🩺 Support: chaplains, faith leaders, and trusted friends can walk alongside you.
📚 What the evidence says
- 🟡 Spiritual community and health. A systematic review with a 27-member expert panel found that frequent participation in a religious or spiritual community was associated with about 27% lower mortality, fewer depressive symptoms and less substance use. The panel recommended routinely including spiritual care, including chaplains, in the care of patients with serious illness. (Balboni and colleagues, JAMA, 2022)
⚖️ Most of these findings are observational. Spiritual care always follows each person’s own beliefs, preferences and consent.
🟢 Strongest: randomized trials, reviews of trials or clinical guidelines · 🟡 Observational studies: they show a link, not proof of cause. Sources checked October 29, 2026.
🧩 An added reflection area, not one of the six lifestyle medicine pillars. Always optional.
