Flourishing Together: Faith Communities
Long before there were hospitals, there were houses of worship caring for the sick, feeding the hungry, and gathering people around a shared table. Kitchen Monk invites congregations of every faith and denomination to help bring lifestyle medicine home, through the nurses who already serve among them.
Churches, synagogues, mosques, temples, gurdwaras, meeting houses, and every gathering place of faith: you are welcome here. So are interfaith councils, faith-based clinics, and community ministries. We don’t ask anyone to share our beliefs or to set aside their own.
★ Led by nurses who already walk beside their communities ★
Why Faith Community Nurses
Faith community nurses (sometimes called parish or congregational nurses) are registered nurses who promote whole-person health within a faith community, caring for body, mind, and spirit. They are trusted, they know their people, and they are already there on ordinary days, not just in a crisis.
We hope to launch Flourishing Nursing programming first through faith community nurses who also bring experience in:
- Lifestyle medicine: the six pillars of nutrition, physical activity, restorative sleep, stress management, positive social connection, and avoiding risky substances.
- Holistic nursing: caring for the whole person, honoring the connection of body, mind, spirit, and community.
- Nurse coaching: walking beside people as they set their own goals, rather than simply telling them what to do.
Where faith, food, and fellowship already meet, nurses can help health take root.
What this could look like in your congregation
- Kitchen gatherings: hands-on cooking and shared meals in your fellowship hall, honoring your tradition’s food practices, holy days, and seasons of fasting and feasting.
- Walking together: movement groups that double as fellowship.
- Rest and renewal: conversations on sleep, stress, and sabbath-style rest, in language that fits your community.
- Caring for caregivers: support for the nurses, clergy, and volunteers who carry so much for others.
- Connecting to care: helping members link with their own clinicians, local programs, and community resources.
Every community chooses its own path. The framework travels; your congregation decides what fits.
🍲 From Fellowship Hall to Teaching Kitchen
Your congregation may already have what a teaching kitchen needs: a kitchen, a gathering space, and people who love to feed each other. With a faith community nurse, a volunteer cook, and trusted resources, a shared meal can become a cooking class, and a potluck can become a place of healing.
- Teaching Kitchens & the Teaching Kitchen Collaborative: what teaching kitchens are and the network helping them grow.
- Food for Life classes from the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine, often hosted in community and faith spaces.
- Full Plate Living: a free 8-session group program anyone can facilitate, including in churches.
- Move With a Nurse™: add a walk before the meal.

Our promises to faith communities
- Faith is always optional. No one needs to share any belief, or any faith at all, to use Kitchen Monk’s health education, recipes, movement ideas, or community. Faith content is only ever offered where people choose it.
- We respect every tradition’s beliefs, practices, and leadership.
- We’re open about our own roots: some of our stories draw on the founder’s Christian faith. Programming in your community follows your tradition, and we will never use it to persuade anyone toward or away from any religion.
- Health education supports, and never replaces, each person’s own medical care.
- We’ll build this with you, not for you, and learn together whether it helps.
