🪔 From Crimea to the Kitchen Monk
The lamp began in a war. Nurses are still carrying it.
Modern nursing was born in wartime. During the Crimean War, Florence Nightingale walked the wards at night with her lamp, and the soldiers called her “the Lady with the Lamp.” That war took its name from Crimea, the Ukrainian peninsula on the Black Sea.
More than 170 years later, nurses in Ukraine are carrying that same lamp through another war: caring for patients through air-raid sirens, power outages, and attacks on the hospitals where they work.
The Book of the Lamp, Book I of The EVERgreen Chronicles™, begins with that lamp: From Crimea to the Kitchen Monk. It is a story about carrying light for one another, and about a question every caregiver knows: who cares for the one who cares? Today, part of the answer is all of us, standing with Ukraine’s nurses.

The lamp helps us get through the night. The garden is what comes after: nourishment, healing, and rebuilding. The Cup of Flourishing brings Food as Medicine for All into everyday kitchens, and asks a question every caregiver knows: who cares for the one who cares?
We are writing it with a hope for Ukraine in our hearts: that its nurses, families, and communities will one day tend gardens again in peace, and heal, rebuild, and flourish.

Ways you can help
- Give to nurses directly through ICN’s Humanitarian Fund and #NursesforPeace ↗.
- Support trusted humanitarian groups such as the International Committee of the Red Cross ↗ and the International Rescue Committee.
- Welcome Ukrainian families near you. Refugee resettlement agencies, churches, and community groups often need volunteers, rides, and meals. A shared meal is Kitchen Monk at its best.
- Stand with nurses online. Share #NursesforPeace and thank Ukrainian nurses publicly.
- Use your voice as a citizen. Tell your elected representatives that protecting hospitals and health workers matters to you.
- Pray, if that is part of your life, for Ukraine’s people, nurses, and peace.
- Give wisely. Check that a charity is reputable before donating, and be cautious of unsolicited fundraising messages.
