Millions of caregivers. Everyday acts of compassion. A world with more opportunities to flourish. 🌍💚
🩺 Nurses are the largest caring workforce on Earth. Here is who they are, how many there are, and the simple math of what we could do together.
🇺🇸 Meet America’s nursing family
📏 Every number says what it counts: jobs (Bureau of Labor Statistics, May 2025), licensed people (National Council of State Boards of Nursing, 2025), or an estimate.
- 🤲 Certified Nursing Assistants and nursing assistants: 1,448,910 jobs (≈ 1.45 million). The hands closest to daily life: meals, mobility and dignity.
- 🧡 Licensed Practical Nurses and Licensed Vocational Nurses: 648,410 jobs (≈ 0.65 million); 914,339 licensed people (≈ 0.91 million). Same role, two names: California and Texas say “vocational,” most states say “practical.”
- 💙 Registered Nurses: 3,379,720 jobs (≈ 3.38 million); 5,001,022 licensed people (≈ 5.0 million). The largest healthcare profession, in every setting.
- 🩺 Nurse Practitioners: 323,040 jobs (≈ 0.32 million); more than 461,000 licensed (American Association of Nurse Practitioners, 2025). Diagnosis, prescriptions and lifestyle-medicine counseling.
- 🔬 Clinical Nurse Specialists: nearly 90,000 (estimate, 2021 study). Experts who raise the standard of care for whole hospitals.
- 💤 Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists: 51,840 jobs (≈ 0.05 million); about 67,700 practicing (estimate, May 2025). Safety and calm during surgery.
- 🤱 Certified Nurse-Midwives: 7,920 jobs; 14,719 certified (2025). Caring for mothers and babies in life’s first chapter.
- 🎓 Nurse educators (college and university): 77,960 jobs (≈ 0.08 million). Every lesson multiplies through each future nurse.
- 🏫 School nurses: about 132,300 (2018 national study, the newest reliable count). Healthy habits that start in childhood.
- 🏘️ Public health nurses: 29,387 in government public health agencies; 73,478 registered nurses in government public health roles (2022 data). Caring for whole neighborhoods.
- 🧭 Nurse coaches: no reliable public national total yet, so we show none rather than guess. Partners in lasting change.
➗ Adding it up, honestly
👩🏽⚕️ Jobs: 3,379,720 + 1,448,910 + 648,410 + 323,040 + 77,960 + 51,840 + 7,920 = 5,937,800 ≈ 5.94 million nursing jobs (May 2025, checked against the Bureau of Labor Statistics release of May 15, 2026). This counts jobs, not people: someone with two nursing jobs is counted twice, and self-employed nurses are not counted.
🪪 Licensed people: 5,001,022 registered + 914,339 practical nurses = 5,915,361 ≈ 5.92 million.
🤝 Whole nursing family: licensed nurses + nursing assistants ≈ 7.36 million (approximate, because it mixes two kinds of counts).
- 🧩 Clinical nurse specialists, school nurses, public health nurses and nurse coaches are registered nurses, so they are already inside the totals and not added twice.
- 🩺 Nurse practitioners, nurse anesthetists and nurse-midwives are also registered nurses.
- 🗺️ One nurse can hold licenses in several states, so we count people (5.0 million registered nurses), not licenses (5.9 million).
🌍 Nurses around the world
🌐 The World Health Organization counted 29.8 million nurses worldwide in 2023, and a shortage of 5.8 million. By 2030, the world could have 36 million nurses.
- 🌏 Western Pacific: 8.5 million
- 🌎 Americas: 7.5 million
- 🏰 Europe: about 7.2 million (the remainder of the world total)
- 🛕 South-East Asia: 3.6 million
- 🌍 Africa: 1.7 million
- 🏜️ Eastern Mediterranean: 1.3 million
👥 The world count includes nurses, but generally not nursing assistants or aides, and countries name these roles differently. See every country, nurses per 10,000 people, and reporting years on the interactive map.
🧮 The mathematics of changing the world
Participating workforce × people reached per participant = potential direct reach
🌱 A simple example: if 10% of America’s 5,937,800 nursing workforce take part, that is 593,780 people. If each one supports 10 people in a year, that is 5,937,800 support encounters a year.
| 🇺🇸 Taking part | 5 people each | 10 people each | 25 people each |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1% | 296,890 | 593,780 | 1,484,450 |
| 10% | 2,968,900 | 5,937,800 | 14,844,500 |
| 25% | 7,422,250 | 14,844,500 | 37,111,250 |
| 100% | 29,689,000 | 59,378,000 | 148,445,000 |
- 🔁 Encounters are not the same as people. One person may hear from several nurses, or from the same nurse year after year. So the number of different people reached is always smaller than the encounters.
- 👥 Example: if a quarter of those people are also helped by another nurse, the 5,937,800 encounters reach about 4.45 million different people.
- ⚠️ These are illustrative possibilities, not proven health outcomes. Reaching someone is an invitation, not a guaranteed change in their health.
🌿 What each of us can do
💡 One simple idea for everything: support a few people with one small, kind, healthy step at a time.
- 🥦 Whole plant foods: share one salt-, oil- and sugar-free meal, and celebrate the fiber! 🎉
- 🚶🏾♀️ Movement: invite someone on a ten-minute walk after a meal.
- 😴 Restorative sleep: a steady bedtime and a screen-free wind-down.
- 🧘 Stress management: one slow breath, in for four, out for six.
- 🫂 Relationships: ask, “Who helps you carry this?”
- 🕊️ Compassion: thank a nurse or caregiver today.
- 🏘️ Community support: join or start a local flourishing team.
