πΏ Who’s who: PlantPure Nation, PlantPure Communities, and the Pods
π¬ PlantPure Nation is the 2015 documentary directed by Nelson Campbell, son of nutrition scientist T. Colin Campbell, PhD. It follows an effort in Kentucky to test a plant-based diet pilot program and a grassroots program in Nelson’s hometown of Mebane, North Carolina. Its producer and writer also made Forks Over Knives.
π‘ PlantPure Communities is the nonprofit Nelson and Kim Campbell built after the film. It grew an international network of local plant-based support groups called “Pods,” and today offers community toolkits, recipes, and nutrition immersions from its home in Saluda, North Carolina.
π Where the Pods are now: In 2024 the PlantPure Pod Network moved to the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine and is now called Building Healthy Communities. Many groups still carry “PlantPure” or “Pod” in their names. To find or start a group today, use Building Healthy Communities. Joining is free.

Local groups meet for potlucks, cooking demos, talks, and film screenings. Some meet π in person, some π» online, many both. Each group is run independently and sets its own schedule and language.
π‘ Example of a long-running group: the Chapel Hill Plant-Based Nutrition POD β in North Carolina, founded in 2016, became an official PlantPure Pod in 2017 and holds both in-person and virtual gatherings.

PlantPure Communities’ learning site offers community toolkits, such as launching a restaurant campaign and square-foot gardening, built to help local leaders share whole-food, plant-based living. Its main site also has recipes and information about its immersion retreats (π³ retreats are paid programs).

π½ Grown from the Pod movement
Plant Powered Metro New York
Before founding Plant Powered Metro New York in 2019, co-founder Lianna Levine Reisner led a PlantPure Pod in Manhattan; that Pod and its neighbors grew into a metro-wide nonprofit. Today PPMNY counts a network of more than 150 volunteers, educators, and healthcare professionals across the five boroughs, Long Island, and nearby counties, and it is listed in Building Healthy Communities. Its free 21-Day Jumpstart is online, so people outside New York can join too. π Founding member Enrica Sacca is one of the organizers who helped it grow.
