Meet Shebah and the SHEROES

📖 STORY / FICTION 🎨 ACTIVITY ★ AGES 5–12

Shebah, a black-and-white Siberian Husky with blue eyes, a curled bun tail, and a green bandana with a gold lantern charm, looks back warmly on a misty evergreen trail at dusk, with lantern light glowing ahead.

Shebah is a Siberian Husky who walks beside the Flourishing Guardians, the young heroes of our EVERgreen stories. Along the trail, she meets SHEROES: nurses, families, and neighbors who help people and communities flourish.

Meet Shebah

Shebah doesn’t rescue anyone by being the biggest or the fastest. She’s a SHEro because she stays close. When a path feels uncertain, she’s the first to notice, the first to lean in, and the last to leave anyone behind.

Look for her dark coat, her snowy white chest and belly, the thin line of warm tan where they meet, and her bright blue eyes, which glisten in the sun. And watch her tail: it curls up into a round, fluffy bun, and whenever Shebah is happy, that bun wiggles.

Brave · Affectionate · Alert · Playful

🦅 Dedication

SHEROES is dedicated to Momma Eagle, Nina Delores Smith of Seaside, Oregon: the first SHEro, who taught us that flourishing begins with someone who believes in you.

And to the family whose love lit the lamp: my Swedish grandmother, Carolyn Smith, and my grandfather, Kenneth Smith, a veteran and bodybuilder who owned Ken and Sons Select Market in Seaside, which lives on in our stories as the Ken, Daughter & Grandsons EVERgreen Market. Everything here is dedicated to my family.

The Seven SHEROES

SHEROES are the people who move nursing and communities forward. Nurses lead the way, alongside families, caregivers, community health workers, culinary partners, and young Flourishing Guardians.

S · Supporters stay

Grandma Rosa’s clinic visit ran long, and she felt scared. Nurse Ana pulled up a chair and listened until Rosa’s shoulders softened. Shebah rested her head on Rosa’s shoe, as if to say, waiting is easier together.

H · Healers care for body and spirit

Leo scraped his knee on the trail. Nurse Kai cleaned it gently, explaining each step so nothing felt like a surprise. Shebah stayed right beside him, and when Leo finally laughed again, her bun tail gave a happy wiggle.

E · Educators make new things possible

Chopping an onion looked impossible to Sam. A chef and a nurse showed him how to curl his fingertips, then let him try again. By the third try, Sam was grinning. Shebah’s ears perked at every chop.

R · Responders show up when it matters

When a storm knocked out the power, a community health worker and a nurse checked on neighbors who might need help. Shebah heard the knock on Mr. Chen’s door before anyone else did.

O · Organizers bring people together

Teen Guardian Priya and Nurse Grace turned an empty lot into a Saturday garden potluck. Shebah’s happy husky howl was the signal that it was time to gather.

E · Empowerers help people find their own voice

Before his doctor’s visit, Nurse Tomas helped Mr. Ade write down his own questions. “Your questions matter,” Tomas said. Shebah nudged the notebook closer.

S · Systems leaders change what one person can’t

Nurses noticed that many families couldn’t reach the clinic by bus. A nurse leader brought the clinic and the city together, and now there’s an evening bus stop. Shebah was the first to sit beside the new sign.

For parents and teachers: about 2 minutes, no supplies needed, and no names, emails, or personal details are ever asked of children.

For grown-ups: SHEROES and moving nursing forward

SHEROES is Kitchen Monk’s way of celebrating the people who move nursing and communities forward. It connects the children’s stories to a bigger question: how can nurses help people flourish while building conditions in which nurses can flourish, too?

Flourishing Nursing is a developing approach to that question, and a workshop based on it is ◐ in development. It is educational, not an accredited program or certification. Kitchen Monk brings together nursing, lifestyle medicine, culinary medicine, and community, and there’s room for you in it.
